2019 Man O' War Dreadnought Waiheke Syrah
Grape
Syrah
Its Origins
First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"A rich, warming wine with blackcurrant, blackberry, dark cherry and plum flavours plus a suggestion of spice/anise and oak flavours. Although it is accessible when first released it will develop well with bottle age. 22 JUL 2022." Drink 2022 – 2040
94/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"Ripe, varietal, smoky and complex. A complete wine with a core of baked raspberry and soft black curant fruits laced with dusty pepper spice. There’s a wood smoke quality with cinnamon and baking spices adding complexity and charm. As the wine touches the palate a sweet fruit and savoury contrast each other with an abundance of tannins and acidity pulling the attributes together. Flavours of wood and red berry fruits, there’s fine field mushroom and dried herb quality adding length . A lovely wine with best drinking from day of purchase through 2028+. Drink 2022 - 2028+
