Fiano
Fiano is a star Italian white grape that hails, like certain other ancient but newly popular varieties, from the hills of Campania. Now grown across Southern Italy (particularly Puglia and Sicily) and occasionally the New World, wine-lovers are engaged by Fiano’s moderately lush, ‘serious’ palate of tropical fruits, honey and florals with mineral and nutty notes, the balance of which changes with the vineyard location (terroir). The less lean and bony examples come from the Apenine mountains, where the slow-ripening altitudes and volcanic soils of the Fiano di Avellino DOCG has established the grape’s rising reputation for fruit richness, complexity and moderate aging potential.
