2022 Passage Rock Waiheke Reserve Syrah

Grape
Syrah
Its Origins
The Passage Rock dream was first conceptualized in 1991 when founders David and Veronika Evans Gander sat together in an ancient West Australian forest surrounded by vineyards. The concept to create fantastic wines in a beautiful place near the sea was merely the dream of two young people in their prime seeking their way in life. After purchasing the property in 1993, the first vines were planted in 1994 in the head of the beautiful Te Matuku valley in the southeastern end of Waiheke Island. In 1996, bucking the trend and taking a calculated risk Syrah was planted. Since 2001 Passage Rock has become Waiheke Island's most awarded winery in both New Zealand and International competitions, winning multiple gold medals and trophies for the Reserve Syrah. Passage Rock is a love affair that follows the will of the seasons and the instincts of the vintner.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"A bouquet with gravitas and complexity. Aromas and flavours of gravelly dark clay soils and ripe black currant fruits, blackberry and leather, a touch of boot polish and leather, violets and baked raspberry. Dry with firm long chain tannins, a backbone of acidity and core fruit flavours that remain persistent. Well made, complex with spice and sweetness from barrel." Drink 2024 - 2034
96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 vintage)
"Intense, dense syrah with black-fleshed plum, dark berry, black pepper, coffee, liquorice and cigar-box. An impressive, complex red with power and presence. Can be appreciated now but will develop well with bottle age."
