Godello is a Spanish white variety that’s in serious danger of becoming famous. Classic expressions from Spain’s Valdeorras showcase Godello’s completeness as a variety, offering the freshness and mineral expression of, say, a more perfumed Chenin Blanc, while also capable of broad, strident stonefruit and tropicals, with an oiliness of texture reminiscent of fat Chardonnay. Remarkably, even cheap Godellos can contain all these elements at once - and do so with effortless harmony and X factor. Great with anything from fish to white meats, the Godello style is distinctive even if the grape has naming/genetic overlaps with Portuguese variety, Verdelho.
