2021 Millton Clos de Ste Anne Chardonnay

96 Points Raymond Chan Reviews

A beautiful wine, the Clos de Ste Anne Chardonnay is every bit the legend. Its gentle fullness is balanced with real brightness— perhaps due to very little malolactic fermentation — along with what the wine's inimitable Biodynamic winemaker James Millton describes as "warm minerality". An "energetic, luminous" style, the Clos de Ste Anne is a must-try for lovers of beautiful things.

Its Origins

The first biodynamic estate in New Zealand (and the first in the Southern Hemisphere to gain Demeter certification), James and Annie Millton have been growing wine in Manutuke on the banks of the Te Arai river in Gisborne since 1984. Farmed from inception in this manner, it was built on the backbone of family winegrowing in the area, with both James and Annie's parents having vines in what is now known as "Opou" and "Riverpoint". The Clos de Ste. Anne is a single vineyard situated on steep north-facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. The grapes are all hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts present in the vineyard. The estate is mostly known for their Chenin Blanc - a benchmark for the country - but they also grow wonderful Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Gewurztraminer and Riesling.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"This has a full bouquet, penetrating aromas of apricot and nectarine melded with hay, yellow floral, flinty minerals and spice. Medium-full bodied, ripe apricot and nectarine aromas intertwined with citrus peel, hay, yellow floral, delicate spice, clay and flinty minerals. The fruit is ripe with a suggestion of melon, filling the palate with weight and broadness. Lively balanced acidity carries a fine mineral line with spice to linearity. This Chardonnay is elegant, generous with fruit and weight, flows with good energy, minerals and a fine acid line. Match with banana prawns and pork over the next 6-8 years. From 25-year-old vines, own-rooted, dry farmed, handpicked, whole bunch pressed to barriques, fermented with native yeasts and aged on less for 10 months. 14% alc. Biodynamic certified. 19+/20 pts (96 pts) Jun 2023." Drink 2023 - 2031

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 vintage)

"Complex and enticing bouquet showcasing a new, youthful and primary fruit scented wine laced with aromas of clay and mineral, white fleshed fruits and citrus. It is also a very fragrant wine with white flowers and blossom. As the wine warms in glass the scents begin to develop becoming louder and more precise. On the palate there’s weight, freshness and fruit spice then flavours of citrus and white fleshed fruits followed by barrel flavours of gentle baking spices, a whisper of bacon and seasoned wood. A delicious wine with complexity and satin textures, a fine acid line and flavours that reflect a sense of place and time. Great drinking from late 2023 through 2029+."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2020 vintage)

"Rich yet mellow chardonnay with peach, bread dough, saline/oyster shell, toast, spicy oak characters and a hint of sizzled butter. Weighty, mouth-filling wine with a suede-like texture from fine tannins. Satisfying to taste now but I expect it to develop greater character with further bottle age. 29 JUL 2022."
