Its Origins
Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for PInot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Exquisitely elegant and sophisticated, the wine shows white flesh stone fruit, crunchy apple, white floral and oatmeal nuances on the nose, followed by a brilliantly focused palate exhibiting linear mouthfeel and seamless flow. Offering exceptional purity as well as impressive structure, this is gorgeously poised with a outstanding line and length. www.atarangi.co.nz. March 2024." Drink 2026 - 2037
96/100 Stephen Wong MW
"Pale white-gold. A flinty, pithy, reductive nose. Not giving much right now. The palate is expressed all in pale flavours; daikon, grapefruit and ginger with perfume and minerality. Etched, detailed and quietly powerful with excellent salinity and a very finely tuned acidity. Very young, but with a great future—really compact, steely and concentrated yet light on its feet and almost ethereal in delivery. A quietly sophisticated and refined wine which reflects a cooler vintage character 30 Jan 2024." Drink 2026 - 2036
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"A rather gorgeous bouquet filled with scents of ripe, almost sweet grapefruit, white peach and apple. There’s an earthy complexity and finesse from use of oak and fine lees. Additional scents of crumbled stone and clay with a light natural spice and moments of white blossoms lead to a raw silk touch on the palate gives way to citrus and stone fruit flavours, medium+ acid line, a natural spice and judicious use of oak. A wine of complexity and finesse, a dry lengthy finish and delicious textured mouthfeel. Best drinking from late 2024 through 2029+."
