2022 Zaria Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
Winemaker Bryce Edwards natural and intuitive approach to winemaking marries the creative with the analytical and follows from education in viticulture and oenology, as well as seasons upon seasons honing his craft by working vintages in New Zealand (at storied wineries such as Te Awa and Sacred Hill), Napa Valley, Bordeaux, and Austria. Bryce’s winemaking philosophy revolves around cultivating an enjoyable drinking experience — creating wines that he and his wife love and sharing with the wider public. He takes a hands-off approach to his craft, intervening only as much as the grapes require to transform into delicious wine and, in a nod to ancient winemaking techniques, allowing nature to do the rest.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Gorgeously styled and expressed, the enticing bouquet shows golden peach, lemon zest, vanillin oak and oatmeal nuances, leading to a concentrated palate offering terrific weight and persistency. Wonderfully framed by creamy texture and bright acidity, making it delicious and fabulously drinkable. At its best: now to 2029. $34.00. www.zaria.co.nz. Sept 2023.” Drink 2023 - 2029
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS
“Aromas and flavours of fresh white peach and nectarine, a layer of citrus led by grapefruit then a lees spice, nut and soft butterscotch quality. A youthful wine with plenty of acidity and bite, a satin-cream texture, fine tannins and raw mouthfeel on the finish. Well made with a near full-bodied style, a touch of butter and cream. Well made with best drinking from 2024 through 2029.” Drink 2024 - 2029
