2019 Tatty Bogler Waitaki Chardonnay

93 Points John Caro

A delicious Chardonnay from one of NZs most promising regions for the variety. The Waitaki Valley appealed to winemaker John Forrest because of its cooler climate and lime-influenced soils. And here we see why. With an elegant mineral profile that's redolent of its origin on an old seabed, the Tatty Bogler is a sophisticated, foodie Chardonnay — and great value at this price!

Its Origins

Tatty Bogler is the label given to the Waitaki-grown releases by John Forrest of Forrest Wines. Just outside of Renwick, in Marlborough, the Forrest family has been crafting wines since the late 1980’s. Returning to family roots and generations of farming in the Marlborough region seemed a natural progression for John and Brigid Forrest. after successful careers in scientific research and medicine. Fast forward 30 years; many awards and accolades, various labels and vineyards across the country. Forrest is set for generations.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes

"A southern hemisphere twist on French Chablis. Fermented and aged in seasoned French oak barriques; it has a delicate fragrant bouquet of green apple and aromatic herbs, accompanied by nutty, toasted brioche undertones. A powerful weighty wine with refined citrus flavours and hints of ripe quince. Buttery and creamy on the palate with a strong “chalky” mineral backbone. Uniquely Waitaki!"

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)

"Remarkable chardonnay with power, purity and oyster-shell and mineral character that reminds me very much of Chablis. A delicious wine with a seamless texture and lingering finish. Taut, fruity acidity adds tension. 28 JUN 2021."
