Very limited stock — get in quick! A unique variation on the classic Chardonnay style from Nelson legends, Neudorf. This cuvee was grown on the famous Moutere clay soils of Rosie's block. But it was fermented entirely in clay amphora which has added a special texture and savoury complexion to the flavours. Delicious and very collectible. Don't miss out!

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

94/100 The wine Front, Mike Bennie

"Wild ferment and time in amphora. Good ingredients from a great site. Textural impressions of succulence and chalky dryness with green apple, ginger, lime juice, pink grapefruit and a mix of ginger and peppery spice. It’s a heady wine in its flinty, smoky minerality but does that with aplomb and well mixed into assertive fruit characters too. Lots of texture, lots of grip, brightness of fruit flavours and a general sense of quality overall. This is a winner." Drink 2024 - 2032

17/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"Rich yet very lively. Real chew on the end that seems attractively textural rather than mean. Firm but fruity too. Very long. Full screwcapped bottle 1,168 g. Spontaneous fermentation. Aged 10 months in clay amphora and then two months in tank. Admirably informative back labels. (JR)."

96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2022 vintage)

"An interesting mix of savoury/nutty yeast lees/oyster shell, spicy oak, lanolin and a suggestion of green apple flavours. Complex, appealing chardonnay with nicely integrated flavours and an impressively lengthy finish. 17 JUN 2023."
