2023 Durvillea Marlborough Pinot Noir
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2023 vintage
"An early drinking style of pinot noir with generous, bright fruit and supple tannins. COLOUR/APPEARANCE: Bright garnet. AROMA/BOUQUET: Black and red cherry, forest fruits and spice. PALATE: Medium bodied with dark cherry, red berry and plum flavours, a silky texture and long dry finish. FOOD PAIRING: Duck, lamb and venison as well as roasted vegetables and dishes with tomato, pomegranate and tamarind."
91/100 Cameron Douglas (2020 vintage)
”Ripe, fruity, varietal and enticing bouquet with aromas and flavours of fresh red cherry and plum, farmers market raspberries and flavours of clay and stone soil. Tannins and acidity add a sound foundation and texture for the fruit to rest on while the influence of oak is light adding in moments of vanilla and bakers spice. Balanced and ready to drink upon purchase and through 2024.”
90/100 Bob Campbell MW (2020 vintage)
"Moderately intense and quite supple pinot noir with cherry, raspberry, savoury and dried herb flavours. Bright, fresh wine in highly approachable style. An attractive wine offering good value at this price 06 MAY 2021." Drink 2021 - 2026
