Its Origins
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

"A fragrant and fine bouquet with scents of raspberry and cherry, there’s a mix of mineral and sea air, a distinctive leesy quality and pure fruit freshness. On the palate a dry wine with core fruit flavours reflecting the bouquet, a delicate and finely tuned wine with a backbone of acidity and texture from fine tannins accentuated by a saline and soil quality. Best from late 2025 through 2028. A excellent food wine option." Drink 2025 - 2028

“I am a sucker for a pretty label, and Astrolabe have some of the prettiest. This wine is a little ray of sunshine through rose tinted glasses. Aromas and fl avours of strawberries and cream, raspberries and watermelon, and freshly picked flowers. A bold palate bursting with sweet citrus and apple, bright acidity and a long, clean finish.”
