2021 Massolino Barolo Margheria

96 Points Kerin O'Keefe

Rich and savoury, this Cru Margheria is a treat. Massolino's plot on this legendary Barolo vineyard is a combination of calcerous clay and sand, which gently wraps the wine's compelling tannins in ripe berry fruit and harmonious nuances of spice, leather and earthy terracotta clay notes. Built to last, but always the most elegant of the Massolino Barolos, this is simply as good as it gets from this age-old family producer. Very limited stocks of this compelling classic.

Its Origins

Massolino are among the foremost Barolo producers, with deep history in Serralunga d'Alba. Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896 and was also the first to bring electricity to his village. Son Guiseppe and daughter Angela were likewise ahead of their time, in 1934 extending holdings in what are now regarded as some of Barolo's best crus - Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Whilst channelling their tradition, Massolino also utilise the heavier clay soils of Serralunga to bring a satisfying breadth, density and structure to their Barolos - which, balanced against their extreme refinement and expressive clarity - make them almost incomparable for the price.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Kerin O'Keefe

“Always the most elegant of the Massolino Barolos, the fragrant 2021 Margheria stuns with enticing scents of wild roses, perfumed berries, botanical herbs and whiffs of freshly tilled soil. Classy and utterly delicious, the radiant palate is loaded with weightless finesse that wraps around raspberry compote, crushed strawberries, star anise and crushed mint while a hint of blood orange lingers on the close. Refined tannins and fresh acidity keep it beautifully balanced." Drink 2030 - 2036

96/100 JamesSuckling.com, Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas

“This has lovely aromas of blueberries, pine resin, orange rind and a touch of lavender. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with supple tannins in the context of the vintage. It has a seductive, tender, well-integrated fruit profile that makes it very attractive. Drink or hold.”

17+/20 Jancis Robinson, Walter Speller

“Serralunga d’Alba. Just mid ruby. Lifted but still a little closed. Hints of earth. Almost-ethereal red fruit. Transparent and with fine grip. Long, wired red-fruit finish." Drink 2025 - 2032
