An icon of Malborough Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay lives up to its reputation. This gorgeous juice is fermented in crisp, fresh steel (apart from a tiny fraction, which sees some oak for added texture) and the wine comes out weighty, expressive and complex. Although they are world famous, Cloudy Bay isn't resting on laurels -- but still throwing everything into the finest vineyard management and winemaking possible. Don't assume you know it -- try it.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Established in 1985 by Cape Mentelle, Cloudy Bay Vineyards is situated in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. This unique and cool wine region enjoys a maritime climate with the longest hours of sunshine of any place in New Zealand. Cloudy Bay has estate vineyards located at prime sites within the Wairau Valley, and long-term supply agreements with five Wairau Valley growers. The main varieties grown are sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, and pinot noir with lesser quantities of gewurztraminer, Riesling, and pinot gris.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Quite a weighty, textural sauvignon blanc with pleasing richness adding appeal to citrus, grapefruit, capsicum, and nutty lees flavours. A moderately complex wine in a savoury rather than fruity style." Drink 2018 - 2023

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 vintage)

"New Zealand's most internationally acclaimed wine is sought after from Sydney to New York and London. Its irresistibly aromatic and zesty style and intense flavours stem from 'the fruit characters that are in the grapes when they arrive at the winery'. It is sourced from company-owned and several long-term contract growers' vineyards in the Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick and Brancott districts of the Wairau Valley, Marlborough. The juice is mostly cool-fermented with cultured and indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks and aged on its yeast lees, and a small percentage of the blend (3 per cent in 2017) is fermented at warmer temperatures in old French oak barriques and large oak vats. Retasted in November, the light lemon/green 2017 vintage (5*) is scented, mouthfilling and tightly structured, with strong, ripe, tropical fruit flavours to the fore, gentle herbaceous notes, good complexity, crisp acidity and a lingering, dry finish."
