2020 Faiveley Corton Clos Des Cortons Faiveley

A special wine, the Clos Des Cortons is a Faiveley monopole (exclusive to Faiveley) that lies within the famous Grand Cru vineyard of Corton. With majestic depth and age-orientated tannic structure, the flavours are full, the attack is strong and the length is long. Designed to cellar, this is a style that is among the most powerful and compelling in red Burgundy — albeit that Faiveley's expertise will allow it to be approachable without too long a wait.

Its Origins

Domaine Faiveley is one of the biggest domaines (115ha) in Burgundy and, many would argue, one of the best. This illustrious company has been based in Nuits St Georges since the days of Pierre Faiveley who founded the business in 1825. His son Joseph gave his name to the family business, to be followed by the first François, Georges who was instrumental in founding the Chevaliers du Tastevin, Guy who developed the business in the Côte Chalonnaise, François who has recently retired and now his son Erwan, born in 1979. The change of generation, enhanced by the arrival of Bernard Hervet as Managing Director, is clear warning of the intention to dynamise the business. Already there has been a notable expansion of vineyards under Faiveley’s control. Many of Faiveley's top wines are hand bottled with no filtration. This in turn results in clean, opulent wines that often show Pinot Noir at its best. Their concentration and richness are rarely equalled.

What The Critics Say

98/100 James Suckling

"What a stunning fragrance this Corton has, with ripe damson, pomegranate and floral notes interacting in a very exciting way with the wild-herb notes. Very concentrated and focused, without any sense of weight, the finish incredibly vibrant and mineral. Really lifts off at the very long finish. Drink or hold."

94-96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley

"Mingling deep fruit tones evocative of red cherries and plums with notions of loamy soil, licorice, orange rind, rose petals and sweet spices, the 2020 Corton Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Faiveley is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, tangy acids and a long, saline finish. This is extremely promising."

92-94/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

"Very ripe though again, attractively fresh aromas are comprised by notes of poached plum, cassis, the sauvage and a pretty spice nuances, especially anise. The supple and somewhat surprisingly, not especially dense flavors possess a caressing mouthfeel before terminating in a vibrant and sneaky long finish that firms up significantly as it sits on the palate. As always with this ageworthy wine, patience absolutely required." Drink 2037+
