2022 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques

97 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous

A supreme Premier Cru Burgundy from the famous Gevrey-Chambertin. Clos St Jacques is a leading Premier Cru and is considered to have been overlooked at the awarding of Grand Cru status, being well worthy of this designation. In fact, the terroir is in some ways superior to the Grand Crus as it is harvested later, due to the south-east facing sun being moderated by a cooling wind in this spot, at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux. On rocky lime-rich soils the roots grow deep to produce wines of real dimension and nuanced complexity. Collect!

Its Origins

In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses. Jadot’s winemaking team, now led by Technical Director Frédéric Barnier, has maintained a balance of tradition and technology in winemaking that allows Jadot’s wines to express the subtle differences between terroirs that are the essence of fine Burgundy. Though officially retired in 2013, esteemed winemaker Jacques Lardière continues to work in an advisory role and on special projects. Founded in 1859, the house has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots.

What The Critics Say

95-97/100 Vinous, Neal Martin

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques ler Cru absolutely delivers on the nose from the very first sniff: complex mineraldriven red berry fruit, exquisitely defined, takes it up another level from the Lavaux Saint-Jacques. The palate is beautifully balanced with finely chiseled tannins. Poised yet powerful, it fans effortlessly toward the immensely detailed and beguiling finish. Jadot has stepped up a gear in terms of its Clos Saint-Jacques in recent vintages (for example, the 2019), and this will give the likes of Rousseau and Clair a run for their money." Drink 2027 - 2052

96/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis

"The 2022 vintage is a marvellous return to form for Jadot’s Clos Saint-Jacques, typically among the touchstones of this house. The wine is dense and rich with ripe, concentrated, plummy fruit and an edge of dark chocolate. The sensation is ripe but not overly so; the wine is tannic but supple; there is neither astringency nor overconcentration here. The grapes from Jadot’s hectare of vines at the centre of the Clos are destemmed and gently extracted before ageing in cask (one-third new). The result is a delicious example of this regal premier cru." Drink 2030 - 2065
