2014 Forrest Reserve Cornerstone Gimblett Gravels Red

Grape
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec
Its Origins
Forrest wines was started in 1988 by doctors John and Brigid Forrest, focused on planting in Marlborough’s Renwick but including some expansion to joint venture Cornerstone in Hawkes Bay’s Gimblett Gravels. Though Brigid is a medical rather than scientific doctor, she was and is equally involved in the envisioning and running of this hands-on operation. Nonetheless, John’s immense energy and former doctorate in molecular biochemistry has made him not only one of the most well-known but technically expert of New Zealand winemakers. Experimental too, as today the sprawling Forrest range explores many terroirs, mainly in Marlborough, while taking credit in the ‘Doctor’s’ range for early ventures into new varieties such as Arneis and Gruner Veltliner, as well as successful naturally low alcohol styles of Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec grapes the bouquet and palate of this expression offers complexity, integration, a snapshot of a rather good vintage and bottle-age worth waiting for. Flavours of fresh and dried berry fruits, firm tannins and medium+ acidity there’s black berry and plum, some bottler chocolate and clove spice. Still integrating through near its plateau this is a delicious wine to be enjoyed alongside cheeses and meaty stews, pastas dishes that include olive. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2028+." (Tasted August 2024)
