2023 Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso

Grape
Usually Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot
Its Origins
Grattamacco, founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, who has since sold the estate to Colle Massari, sits at the end of a long, winding drive in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast (home of Sassicia). It's a land with a very unusual microclimate, a windy plain 100m above sea level, where the estate gets 300 sunny days a year and a steady breeze. The sun and the wind work together to help their organically grown grapes--Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Vermentino--ripen without rot. Add this natural propitiousness to the skills of enologist Maurizio Castelli and winemaker Luca Maronne, and you can see how Grattamacco invariably produces wines that please both enthusiasts and connoisseurs. For example, this pair's tender loving care extends to the point of inventing Rube Goldberg-looking machinery that gently tips the sorted grapes into the maceration vats to keep their skins from bruising and thus releasing harsh tannins. Grattamacco holds unshakeable faith in the terroir of Toscano, particularly as it is expressed in the region’s most emblematic grape, Sangiovese, and the estate shows this commitment in their organic viticulture and traditional vinification practices that include using gravity, natural temperature and humidity in vinifying and refining their wines.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Jeb Dunnuck, Audrey Frick
"The 2023 Bolgheri Rosso highlights the importance of the Cabernet Franc in the blend. In the glass, it displays a purple/red color and is highly expressive with wonderful energy on the nose. Fermented in stainless steel tank, and then in used barrels (3 to 4 years old), the nose reveals lively aromas of currants, graphite, black raspberries, sweet herbs, and floral perfume. The palate is full-bodied, with a refreshing, compact, and angular structure, well-defined tannins, an even spine of acidity, and notes of dusty earth through the finish. An overachiever with exceptional purity, this is an early contender for top lists of the year. Bravo." Drink 2026-2040
92/100 Falstaff
"Dark purple red with a fine rim. Expressive bouquet of red and blackcurrant, plus fine savouriness, coffee powder and some cocoa bean. Flattering on notion, with rich fruit, then gripping tannins, plenty of juice through to the lingering finish. The blend is 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Sangiovese and 5% Petit Verdot." Drink 2025-2029
91/100 Decanter
"Grattamacco's Bolgheri Rosso 2023 is intense and chewy, with fresh dark fruits matched to incisive acidity. A succulent mid-palate leads to a balsamic finish with floral notes. It's all nicely in balance but needs time to show its best. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot.
