2025 Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Grape
Sauvignon Blanc
Its Origins
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
93/100 and rated Excellent, Cameron Douglas MS
Pungent and precise, powerful and classic with a core of ripe citrus and pomaceous fruits, aromas and flavours of red apple and grapefruit, citrus peel and sea-spray. A dry wine with persistent flavours framed by a saline and mineral quality, plenty of acidity delivers freshness and style and an emerging cape gooseberry flavour adds breadth. Lengthy and well made with best drinking from 2025 through 2030+.
93/100, Cameron Douglas MS (2024 vintage)
“Pungent and fruity with a core of tropical fruits from mango to passionfruit, lemon and fresh herbs. Dry with a decent palate squeeze from ripe acidity, flavours reflect the bouquet plus white peach and fruit spice. Well made, taut and new with best drinking from late 2024 through 2027.”
Selected for the Appellation Marlborough Annual Collection 2022 (2022 vintage)
Winemaker press release: "Appellation Marlborough has launched a new initiative to select 12 sauvignon blancs each year to represent our region. We are extremely proud to have earned two spots in the top 12: our Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Astrolabe Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2022. The purpose of the collection is to showcase the best examples of Marlborough sauvignon blanc. You can find more about Appellation Marlborough on their website. The judges were Emma Jenkins MW, Liz Wheadon and Cameron Douglas MS, and more than 60 wines from Marlborough’s best producers were tasted blind. There were only nine places reserved for classic styles, and we are the only producer to have two wines in that category. For these two wines, Simon is looking for a pure expression of variety and region, so he is pleased to see this being appreciated by the judges."
