2022 Bouchard Beaune du Chateau 1er Cru Blanc

Its Origins
Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW
"The golden-hued Beaune du Château white from 2022 surprises on the initial attack with lemon peel and grapefruit aromas; with time, warmer notes of apricot and quince develop, along with some notes of smoky reduction. The texture is rich yet still vibrant. The grapes are from 10 hectares of vines spread over five lieux-dits: Aigrots, Tuvilains, Les Teurons, Sur Les Grèves, and Les Sizies; they are pressed as whole clusters and hardly settled before being run into cask for fermentation on native yeasts. Picking began for this white on 29 August to preserve freshness. Drink 2027-2055"
93/100 James Suckling, Stuart Piggot
"Lovely aromas of white peach, ripe pear and white flowers with a discreet touch of lees complexity. However, the fine tannins and chalky character married to them provide an excellent counterpoint to that fruit. Bone-dry with a lovely chalky freshness at the finish. A cuvee from 5 different Beaune 1er Cru sites, matured in small oak barrels, of which just 15% were new. Drink or hold."
92/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW (2020 vintage)
"This Beaune premier cru is blended across five different lieux-dits totaling 10ha, including Les Aigrots, Les Tuvilains, Les Teurons, Sur les Grèves, and Les Sizies. Fermented and aged with 15% new casks, which marks the wine a bit at this point. The fruit character is more ripe apple and butter than citrus; all the same, the wine has good freshness to bring it into balance on the palate. The wood should fade with time, making this a wine for mid-term cellaring at least."
