2022 Boneline Waipara Sharkstone Chardonnay
Grape
Chardonnay
Its Origins
Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and it’s offerings.
What The Critics Say
94/100 The Real Review, Stephen Wong
"Pale, light gold. A Mendoza-clone nose of sappy fruit with minerality and oak showing. Flinty reduction. The palate is intense and full, lots of drive, weight and coiled energy just waiting to explode across the palate. Give it a year or two and it will be very impressive. Grainy, chalky phenolics, long, a bit of heat on the back but very good concentration and intensity here. Classically structured with oak and sappy fruit for the long haul 30 JAN 2024." 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"The invitation to immediately taste the wine is driven by scents of peach and sweet grapefruit, lees and oak complexities and vanilla custard. On the palate the wine is delicious with layers of spice and fine tannins, there’s some warming alcohol accentuated by the acid line then contrasting core flavours of stone and tree fruits, citrus and barrel spices. Well made with plenty of weight and creaminess, length and complexity. Best drinking from early 2024 through 2029." Drink 2024 - 2029
91+/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin
"The 2022 Sharkstone Chardonnay is rich and complex on the nose, with layers of crushed nuts, yellow peach, ripe orchard fruit and lashings of salt/white spice, with an aromatic bent that leans toward tatami mat and straw. There's torched citrus, briny acidity and obvious, fleshy fruit. There's lots going on, with plenty to touch and feel; it's an almost carnal/corporeal feeling Chardonnay. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. This is a blend of clones, but in majority is composed of Mendoza (from different sources, planted on different blocks) and a portion (Hellblock) on its own roots. So, there's a kaleidoscope of diversity within this." Drink 2023 - 2032
