2019 Astrolabe Wrekin Chardonnay
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS
“Complex and alluring aromas of fruit, minerals and toasty barrel spices, a layer of flinty white smoke adds depth while a mix of pure lemon and grapefruit, white peach and flowers add charm and poise. Youthful, tense, fruity and dry on the palate with flavours that mirror the nose, fine wood tannins and medium+ acidity secure the foundation structure as well as adding length. Well made and ready to enjoy from mid to late 2021 through 2026+.” Drink 21 - 2026+
94/100 Bob Campbell MW
"From an organic vineyard in the clay-rich Southern Valleys. Rich, textural chardonnay with white peach, vanilla, ginger, citrus and sizzled butter flavours. A tasty, complex wine that should develop well with bottle age."
5 Stars Michael Cooper
“The very harmonious, youthful 2019 vintage was grown in the Wrekin Vineyard, in the Southern Valleys. Hand-harvested and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak puncheons, it is bright, light lemon/green, with fresh, generous, citrusy, peachy flavours, biscuity notes adding complexity, and a creamy-textured, long finish. Showing obvious potential, it should be at its best 2022+.”
