2022 Bouchard Meursault Les Clous

94 Points James Suckling

This is an inexpensive peek at one of Burgundy's most famous locales, a wine that Allen Meadows of Burghound has called "a lovely Meursault villages." Sourced from a more elevated site in this hallowed terrain, the Les Clous is a deliciously plump but also refined and sophisticated Meursault for a very reasonable price! Snap this up!

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

94/100 James Suckling, Stuart Pigott

"The lemony nose shines like the morning star. Very cool and elegant with no trace of the opulence that's widely considered to be typical for this appellation. Becomes more and more fascinating the further it flows over your palate. Wonderful, crystalline minerality and lime freshness at the very long finish. From 8.6 hectares of vines at 300 meters altitude on a stony, limestone soil, where the grapes have to be picked a week later than those in the warmer sites of this appellation. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

93/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW

"There is a lovely freshness to Bouchard's Meursault Les Clous 2022 that brings a marvellous balance and length to the wine. The initial attack boasts aromas of citrus and apricot, acacia flowers and a saline minerality. There is richness as well, with notes of marzipan as the wine opens up on the palate. The grapes are from a parcel of over eight hectares that average 300 metres elevation, planted in stony marl soils that hold enough water to avoid stress in the summer's heat." Drink 2025 - 2045

90-92/100 Vinous, Neal Martin

"The 2022 Meursault Les Clous has a slight reduction on the nose, making it difficult to read. The fresh palate has plenty of extract, orange pith, mandarin and light stem ginger touches, becoming quite waxy in texture towards the finish. With good weight and length, this is much better than the previous vintage." Drink 2026 - 2046
