2022 Squawking Magpie Chatterer Pinot Gris
Grape
Pinot Gris
Its Origins
Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.
What The Critics Say
Yvonne Lorkin
"Bright pear and green apple aromas combine with a tweak of nutmeg and yellow plum on the nose and palate. The acidity is fresh and peaky which accentuates its dry finish. 2022 was a challenging vintage and this is a solid effort."
4 Stars Cuisine Magazine (2021 vintage)
"An excellent Hawke’s Bay example with varietal typicity in the form of pear drops, florals and red-apple spice. The fruit characters are layered beautifully against the spice and florals in this fresh and elegant gris. A wine with fantastic palate weight and perfect poise."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 Vintage)
"Fruit centric and varietal with aromas of brown pears and apples, fruit spice and a touch of pepper. Very fragrant and enticing bouquet overall. On the palate - warm and generous, fleshy an ripe, fruity and varietal with flavours that reflect the nose. Medium+ (ish) acidity and warming alcohol highlight a satin texture with a leesy autolysis layer also adding complexity and length. Balanced, well made and ready. Best drinking from today and through 2024." Drink 2020 - 2024
