Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb

"This almost-dry 2022 Chenin Blanc Sec Southern Valleys is textural and satisfying. It is an attractive and savory example with poached pear and apple flavors and delicate pastry notes. You should expect a rounded wine that fills the mouth with the variety's natural bite of acidity cutting through the small amount of residual sugar remaining. The wine's fruit brightness distinguishes it from a Loire wine, but it effectively showcases the natural characteristics of the grape variety in a cool climate." Drink 2023 - 2028

4.5 stars Canvas, Yvonne Lorkin

"We should all thank our lucky tonsils that Simon Waghorn chucked in a promising career in seaweed science to pursue winemaking instead. Otherwise, we'd not experience the floral, feisty intensity of this certified organic chenin blanc and that would be tragic. This sec (seck), chenin has a touch of sweetness and absolutely screams fresh apple, elderflower, and white peach and offers punchy, bracing, lemony acidity. Serve chilled and savour."

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2021 vintage)

"Fragrant, lifted bouquet of apple and white fleshed fruits, a lees and mineral layer with a white blossom and white peach fragrance. On the palate - off-dry with a whisper of sweetness with contrasting acidity then flavours of pear and apple, citrus pith and a moment of dried herb. Youthful, tense and salivating on the palate with a light saline wash on the finish. Well made, youthful and ready from drinking from mid to late 2022 through 2030+." Drink 2022 - 2030+
