A serious Vin Santo from a leading producer in the Tuscan hilltop village of Montalcino. This gorgeous dessert wine comes from the DOC area called Sant'Antimo, which overlaps with the Montalcino but allows other grapes like Trebbiano and Malvasia. These white grapes are late-harvested and dried on straw mats, then pressed and aged for 8-9 years in the small caratelli barrels that carry the "mother" yeasts from all the previous decades. Complex and poised, this large 500ml bottle of Poggione Vin Santo is a steal at the price. Stocks are limited!

Il Poggione is one of Montalcino's best and also more historic estates, established at the end of the 19th Century by Lavinio Franceschi and now run by the fifth generation. But the star quality may be the current winemakers, father-son team Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci. With consummate skill they have introduced modern technology while maintaining traditional style and techniques, similarly balancing a natural and non-interventionist ethic while remaining unusually involved in every aspect of vineyard and production. As superlatives are lavished on their wines from the highest quarters, Il Poggione is coming to embody the supreme quality on offer from this famous yet still undervalued Tuscan appellation.
