2018 Azelia Barolo Margheria

95 Points Wines Critic
In stock
From the great Margheria Cru, this Barolo is built to last. Slighter fuller intensity, structure and colour come from the clay soils, with this vineyard's olive and umami undercurrent deepening the Nebbiolo grape's floral nature so beautifully. Impressive now it is still only a glimpse at what it will be, so keep this in cellar at least a little while. Beautiful!

Its Origins

Alongside Massolino the barolos from Azelia are eye-watering bargains in the fine wine world. Anyone with a love of the nebbiolo grape should search out these under-valued Barolos for they are some of the most age- worthy wines in the world. In 1920 Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino began to vinify part of the grapes produced in the family's vineyards, a small rural reality in the heart of the Langhe region, in Castiglione Falletto. His son Alfonso started enthusiastically to bottle the wine produced and thanks to Luigi's father, Lorenzo, with perseverance and willpower, the wines were for the first time exported. The Azienda Agricola Azelia, in the centre of the area of Barolo production, is nowadays composed of 16 hectares and it produces, on average, 80,000 bottles per year. Luigi is supported by his wife Lorella and his son Lorenzo, who bears the name of his grandfather and who represents the fifth generation of wine producers. The family management is essential as it permits an extreme precision in every step of the production.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Winescritic.com,

"Iconic in feminine beauty, it alternates notes of lavender, hibiscus, calendula, dehydrated cherries, pomegranate and lime blossom. Medium-full body, silky tannins of commendable beauty that will need time to relax in all their energy and a classic and dynamic finish that from the center of the palate onwards seeks a really important extension. Better from 2023."

94/100 Robertparker.com, Monica Larner

"The 2018 Barolo Margheria opens to a wide range of savory aromas with dark fruit, pressed rose, crushed stone and rusty nail. Those rusty or ferrous notes are typical of Nebbiolo wines from Serralunga d'Alba. The wine is tight and firm in texture with a polished and very linear style. Drink 2024-2044"

93/100 Decanter, Aldo Fiordelli

"Margheria is the first MGA to be harvested at the Scavino estate. Chalk and red currants dominate the nose, enhanced by framboise sauvage and cinnamon, with camphor-like balsamic depth. The attack is full of sucrosity and silky tannins - very well extracted and handled but mostly a sign of careful canopy management in the vineyard in this complicated vintage. The tannins are dusty but ripe, the palate fiercely Nebbiolo in its muscularity with an anise, cherry kernel and watermelon finish sustained by moderate acidity. Possibly the alcohol here is a bit less integrated than other examples." Drink 2022 - 2035
