2018 Azelia Barolo Cerretta

95 Points Decanter
In stock
A unique new Azelia label sourced in a very special cru vineyard in Serralunga. Azelia's Scavino family have long wanted to make a Cru Barolo from Cerratta, a south-facing slope of calcerous clay where mass-selected vines were planted 30 years ago. To mark the centenary of the estate, Azelia released this marvelous Cru in 2020 as a top-line label. With beautiful breadth and linear structure, the Cerretta is a serious cellar prospect and highly collectible, being among the first few vintages of this future legend. Get in before it's gone!

Its Origins

Alongside Massolino the barolos from Azelia are eye-watering bargains in the fine wine world. Anyone with a love of the nebbiolo grape should search out these under-valued Barolos for they are some of the most age- worthy wines in the world. In 1920 Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino began to vinify part of the grapes produced in the family's vineyards, a small rural reality in the heart of the Langhe region, in Castiglione Falletto. His son Alfonso started enthusiastically to bottle the wine produced and thanks to Luigi's father, Lorenzo, with perseverance and willpower, the wines were for the first time exported. The Azienda Agricola Azelia, in the centre of the area of Barolo production, is nowadays composed of 16 hectares and it produces, on average, 80,000 bottles per year. Luigi is supported by his wife Lorella and his son Lorenzo, who bears the name of his grandfather and who represents the fifth generation of wine producers. The family management is essential as it permits an extreme precision in every step of the production.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Decanter, Aldo Fiordelli

"Cerretta is the last MGA to be harvested by the Scavino family. For the 2018, the grapes were picked on 20 October, fermented and macerated for 50 days then aged in large oak casks for up to 30 months. Reductive at first, the wine reveals graceful aromas of sweet Parma violet alongside new leather, dried cherry and meat. The palate is full of sucrosity, with still-rugged tannins and a savoury character allied to crisp acidity and a blood orange flavour. Refined on the finish, it again finds its integration and an almost-mineral character. What a great example of the 2018 vintage!" Drink 2022 - 2038

95/100 Robertparker.com, Monica Larner

"The Azelia 2018 Barolo Cerretta is a bold and powerful expression with dark fruit, grilled herb and ferrous notes of rusty iron that stand out strong in this hot vintage. The wine tastes firm and almost salty on the palate with long, polished tannins. This bottle is a shiny gem in this estate portfolio. Drink 2024-2045"

95/100 Winescritic.com, Rafaelle Vecchione

"Warm and enveloping in the main profile it shows mixed floral and fruity notes reminiscent of hibiscus, geraniums, lemon peel, lemongrass, peppermint and eucalyptus. Medium-full body, fine-grained tannins and a classic finish of pleasant relaxation and character. Better from 2024."
