Its Origins

"Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be. It has a devoted band of customers who buy most of the wine through the cellar door or mail order (Rocky O'Callaghan's entrancing annual newsletter is like no other). Some wine is sold through restaurants, and there are two retailers in Sydney, and one each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Whether they will have the Basket Press Shiraz available is another matter; it is as scarce as Henschke Hill of Grace (but less expensive). Ben Radford, whom I first met in South Africa some years ago, has been entrenched as Rocky's right-hand man, and is destined to take over responsibility for winemaking when the time comes for Rocky to step back from an active role." -- James Halliday

What The Critics Say

93/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh

"Shiraz and Cabernet, the classic Aussie blend, and gee, it works well. Blackberry, blackcurrant, raspberry, some mint, a little tobacco along with some liquorice. It’s medium-bodied, soft and approachable, with fine-grained tannin, a minty black and red fruited succulence, balanced acidity, and while it’s kind of juicy, it also has the rather fetching autumnal character about it, along with a chocolate box richness, and a finish of excellent length. A little raw almond carries on the finish. Supple, charming, and very nice to drink." Drink 2024 - 2032+

92/100 Huon Hooke

"Good depth of red with a trace of purple remaining, the bouquet meaty/smoky and earthy/cedary, while the palate is medium bodied and lean with bright acidity and dusty, velvet tannins in good balance with the wine. A hint of licorice. Good balance of fleshy extract, fruit and tannin. Drinking well now and has several years ahead of it. 09 Dec 2024." Drink 2024 - 2033
