2021 Rockford Moppa Springs Grenache Blend

Grape
Usually Grenache, Mataro (Mouvedre) and Alicante Bouchet
Its Origins
"Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be. It has a devoted band of customers who buy most of the wine through the cellar door or mail order (Rocky O'Callaghan's entrancing annual newsletter is like no other). Some wine is sold through restaurants, and there are two retailers in Sydney, and one each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Whether they will have the Basket Press Shiraz available is another matter; it is as scarce as Henschke Hill of Grace (but less expensive). Ben Radford, whom I first met in South Africa some years ago, has been entrenched as Rocky's right-hand man, and is destined to take over responsibility for winemaking when the time comes for Rocky to step back from an active role." -- James Halliday
What The Critics Say
94/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"All things considered, this is the value pick of the Rockford range. Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. It’s from Moppa, Ebenezer and Kalimna, despite the name. This is, I think, easily the best release of Moppa Springs to date. It has perfume, almond biscuit, ripe red fruits, spice, iodine, vanilla and dried mint. Medium-bodied, kind of juicy, but keeps itself tight and refined, tannin is fine with something of a graphite character, and the acidity is fresh and so well integrated. There’s a curry leaf character here too, which I really like, and the finish is bright and long. It’s a delightful wine. So nicely done. Touch and go for 95 points really." Drink 2024 - 2031+
93/100 Huon Hooke
"Deep-ish red with a good tint of purple, the bouquet is a touch reticent but has appealing grenachey armas of browned spices, dried herbs, leather and machine-oil, while the palate provides plush texture and layered flavours of sweetly ripe berry fruits, dried spices and herbs, and an earthy savouriness. The tannins are ample but soft and smoothly rounded. Lovely balance. 04 Aug 2024." Drink 2024 - 2035
