2020 Elephant Hill Hawkes Bay Airavata Syrah
Grape
Syrah
Its Origins
Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"A co-fermented blend of syrah 99% and viognier 1% has produced a supple, elegant wine with ripe plum, black pepper, and subtle floral flavours. Deliciously accessible now but with cellaring potential. Well-structured red with a backbone of sweet, ripe tannins. 15 SEP 2023." Drink 2023 - 2030
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)
"A powerful, complex and very enticing bouquet of dark berries and baked earth qualities. There’s an aged meat and toasty barrel spices complexity with core black currant and dark plum flavours, there’s a leather quality and bold oak statement with clove and charred vanilla pod. Tannins are abundant, firm and ripe, acidity sets the backbone of structure in place and fruits offer contrasts soaking up the power and presence of the wood and spice qualities. Fantastic wine, complex and lengthy, detailed and youthful."
