Grahams Six Grapes Port

95 Points Decanter
In stock
This could be described as a proper Vintage Port that's merely been declassified. The wine is made from grapes of the highest standard, hence the six grapes symbol and idea - an historic marking used to designate only the best barrels. But it includes more than one vintage and is bottled fairly early, so it is richly fruited and soft in style - bringing heaps of depth and roundness without needing age in cellar. It is described as an everyday back-up for connoisseurs of the very best Vintage Port, which means for ordinary punters like ourselves it is the best Port we'd ever need.

Its Origins

The story of two families across three centuries. For almost two hundred years W & J Graham’s has been an independent family business renowned for producing the finest Port wines. Graham’s has always been a pioneer. Graham's was one of the first Port companies to invest in its own vineyards in Portugal’s Douro Valley in 1890 and is now at the cutting edge of innovation in winemaking techniques. Today, five Symington cousins share responsibility for every aspect of the company and personally make the Graham’s wines. They too have been involved with Port and the Douro for many generations, with ancestry dating back to the mid-17th century. Graham’s owns five mountainous vineyards, which are located in different parts of the best wine-growing areas of the Douro region. Each property has the maximum ‘A’ grade classification. Much of the original wild flora has been left deliberately undisturbed amongst the vines on these estates to preserve the indigenous biodiversity, which Graham’s believes contributes to making wines with a more unique and powerful expression of this terroir.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Decanter World Wine Awards, 2016 (also Regional Trophy in 2013)

"Warm, fruity and inviting chocolate aromas meld with herbal, minty notes and mature fruit compote underneath. The Deliciously youthful and fiery palate contains sweet black fruit, rich plum notes, some herbiness and a lively acidity. There are fruity ripe tannins on the finish."

Vinous, Stephen Tanzer

"Very saturated dark red. Youthful port aromas of cassis, licorice, chocolate, herbs and damp earth. Very intense, sweet flavors of chocolate and dark berries. Robust yet smooth and not obviously alcoholic. Superb fruit is given clarity by firm acids. Real wine-class port, with terrific structure, freshness and delineation of flavor."

Winemaker notes

"Essentially a "declassified Vintage Port", the Six Grapes Blend is made primarily of the four uncontested ‘stars’ of the Port region, the violety and aromatic Touriga Franca, the rich, tannic and well structured Touriga Nacional, the raspberry tinged Tinta Roriz and the sweet chocolatey Tinta Barroca."
