2021 Rockford Rifle Range Cabernet

Grape
Cabernet Sauvignon
Its Origins
"Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be. It has a devoted band of customers who buy most of the wine through the cellar door or mail order (Rocky O'Callaghan's entrancing annual newsletter is like no other). Some wine is sold through restaurants, and there are two retailers in Sydney, and one each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Whether they will have the Basket Press Shiraz available is another matter; it is as scarce as Henschke Hill of Grace (but less expensive). Ben Radford, whom I first met in South Africa some years ago, has been entrenched as Rocky's right-hand man, and is destined to take over responsibility for winemaking when the time comes for Rocky to step back from an active role." -- James Halliday
What The Critics Say
96/100 Huon Hooke
"Deep, bold colour with a good purple meniscus and the bouquet is very cabernet of a ripe style: cassis, mulberry, fresh turned earth and no real sign of leafiness or overt oak. The wine is rich and full-bodied, smooth textured and perfectly ripe, the tannins supple, smooth and flowing from start to finish, without astringency or harshness, the finish effortless and lingering. A really lovely cabernet and one of the best I've tasted under this label. 18 Dec 2024." Drink 2026 - 2039
95/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"I bought singles of all new red releases for review, because I like to get them on the site. Important wines for many, and a staple in the cellar of many Rockford stalwarts. If you’re a fan of Rockford, and indeed Rifle Range, then this won’t disappoint. It’s red and black fruited with dark chocolate flavours, some tobacco, slight mint and baking spice, but has that pleasing rose and vanilla perfume that these wines often show. It supple and flows along really nicely, though despite the stated alcohol, it does taste quite ripe, though that’s an observation, not a problem. Lavish fruit, but with a savoury component, and good balance throughout. Tannin is there, sooty and gently chewy. The length is good too. It’s sort of a warm hug from the Barossa in terms of Cabernet style, but it’s a lovely wine, and thoroughly charming. It’s just over the line for 95 points." Drink 2024 - 2036+
