2025 Forrest Albarino

92 Points John Caro
In stock
A great price on this serious Albarino from the specialist in white varietals, John Forrest. The Spanish Albarino grape is producing really classy and classic examples in New Zealand. This offering from Forrest is a refreshing white with expressive tree fruits that lead to a long, dryish and salty-mineral finish. A great option for lovers of elegant, European-styled whites.

Its Origins

Forrest wines was started in 1988 by doctors John and Brigid Forrest, focused on planting in Marlborough’s Renwick but including some expansion to joint venture Cornerstone in Hawkes Bay’s Gimblett Gravels. Though Brigid is a medical rather than scientific doctor, she was and is equally involved in the envisioning and running of this hands-on operation. Nonetheless, John’s immense energy and former doctorate in molecular biochemistry has made him not only one of the most well-known but technically expert of New Zealand winemakers. Experimental too, as today the sprawling Forrest range explores many terroirs, mainly in Marlborough, while taking credit in the ‘Doctor’s’ range for early ventures into new varieties such as Arneis and Gruner Veltliner, as well as successful naturally low alcohol styles of Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2025 vintage

"This wine shows why our Southern Valleys vineyards are so special. Everything we’d hoped for and showing all the traditional Albariño elements, plus that extra fruit lift of New Zealand to keep it interesting. Vibrant acidity, white peach, winter cole pear, apricots and quince, with an orange zest undertone. It’s full and textural, yet refreshing and nicely balanced, with drying minerality to finish."

16/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding MW (2024 vintage)

"Peachy and fresh. Deliciously fragrant. Creamy, fresh and aromatic on the palate. Straightforward varietal wine that tastes dry, the little bit of residual sugar just rounding out the palate. RS 5.5 g/l. (JH)." Drink 2024 - 2026

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2022 vintage)

"Lovely bouquet, lifted, fresh, fruity, varietal and a little bit flirtatious. Flavours of peaches, apple and sweet citrus with a saline mineral quality. A satin smooth texture touches the palate then contrasting acidity, salinity and a core fruit flavours. The acidity provides backbone while the core fruit start with peach then transition to ripe citrus. Balanced, well made, lengthy and ready to drink."
