2020 Bouchard Beaune du Chateau 1er Cru Red Burgundy

92 Points Decanter
In stock
Superb value, this delicious Pinot Noir comes from Premier Cru-rated vineyards in Burgundy's famous Beaune. This locale's charming, gentle fruit-ripeness and softness balances against the minerality from the marly limestone soils. Real concentration here allows a serious oak regime to round the Beaune du Chateau into a complex and compelling frame on this classic style. A powerful 1er Cru Burgundy for drinking or medium term cellaring.

Its Origins

Today The Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731 though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house, Joseph Henriot, acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet while the wines are made by Philippe Prost who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005, enabling them, to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW

"This admirable premier cru red is a blend of all of the domaine parcels in Beaune premier cru - a whopping 17 different terroirs covering 26ha, each vinified separately, with an average 20% whole-cluster and ageing in 20% new casks. There is a lovely, dark, plummy fruit on the nose with a bit of spice and smoke. The texture is silky and supple, with decent acidity, even if it lacks a bit of density on the mid-palate. A well-balanced, classical example of Beaune premier cru." Drink 2023 - 2040

90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley

"Yields of merely 20 hectoliters per hectare have delivered a 2020 Beaune 1er Cru du Château of unusual presence and concentration, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, sweet berries, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, it's deep and layered, with lively acids and powdery tannins. Readers who have walked Beaune's hillsides and know the extent of Bouchard's holdings will realize how much prime terroir goes into this remarkably accessible bottling."

91/100 James Suckling

"Generous aromas of fully ripe blackberries and black cherries with a pronounced licorice note. Impressive concentration for such a large-production wine, the well-judged tannins giving this weight and warmth. Keeps pumping out the fruit and spice at the rich finish, but it’s a bit simple there. A cuvee of wines from 17 plots and a total of 26 hectares of vineyards. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
