2021 Mills Reef Elspeth Chardonnay
Mills Reef Winery was established in 1989 by the Preston family. Through commitment and dedication to excellence, the Mills Reef brand has established itself as one of New Zealand's premium labels with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah. The winery is located on 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a semi-rural setting, just 5 minutes drive from Tauranga's CBD. The vineyards are located in the Hawke’s Bay area, and two of the flagship vineyards, the Mere Road Vineyard and the Mills Reef Trust Vineyard are located right in the heart of the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels. The Mere Road is a 16 hectare block painstakingly managed for low yields to produce the very best grapes for the multi-award winning ‘Elspeth’ and ‘Reserve’ wines.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)
"Attractively aromatic chardonnay with apple, grapefruit, and a seasoning of subtle oak and nutty yeast lees flavours. The wine has good freshness and energy thanks to bright acidity. 04 MAR 2021." Drink 2021 - 2026
Top Ten Chardonnays, Cuisine Magazine 2019 (2017 vintage)
"Charming and well-defined with an exquisite youthful colour. The bouquet is engaging and accented with some with smoky notes and a toasty warmth. The structure is restrained yet the fruit is present which is the hallmark of excellence in winemaking."
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2022 vintage)
"A full-bodied expression with flavours of sweet California peach and yellow apple, there’s a mix of vanilla and baked nut, burnt butter and creamy-yoghurt. A delicious wine with immediate palate appeal from flavours of stone fruits and banana and vanilla to fine tannins and medium+ acid line. Well made, lengthy and ready to drink from 2024 through 2029."
