A full-flavoured and complex Sauvignon blanc from the Hawkes Bay. Always a stand-out example in a style that we should produce more. The Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc sees some influence from barrel aging, as well as a small amount of Semillon and Sauvignon Gris in the blend, to produce a fresh but broad expression of the style. Its Origins

Hawke’s Bay is a very special place for making wine. Its range of slopes, plains and climatic differences, coupled with low humidity and ample ultra-violet light, give winemakers a comprehensive toolkit to showcase their skills. Soils are young and derived from the gravels, silt and sands left behind as the three main rivers of Hawke’s Bay changed course over thousands of years. Te Mata Estate was established here in 1896 specialising in high-quality wines of classical style. The estate was purchased by the Buck and Morris families in the mid 70's, who were influenced by the great wines of France, with Peter Cowley coming on as winemaker in 1984. Peter and viticulturist Larry Morgan have moved the estate into high-quality, self-reflective, low yield winemaking with a focus on sustainable farming. Although Te Mata are mainly known now for the Coleraine, the Bullnose Syrah was called the New World's best red by Steven Spurrier.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2022 vintage

"Radiating a mesmerizing white-gold hue adorned with shimmering green lights, Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc ’22 bursts with its signature perfume – vibrant concentrated nectarine, grapefruit and lime zest with lemongrass, guava and subtle toast notes. The attack broadens into ripe stone fruit and herbal seasoning, developing remarkable richness across the length of the palate. A balanced weight and crystalline acidity add to the immense fruit concentration and long savoury, saline finish. An embodiment of excellence. Is this the best Cape Crest yet? Certainly, it’s the most complex and complete. The separate parcels were each destemmed and lightly crushed, then cooled before a brief period of skin contact. Following pressing and cold-settling, they were run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation. The resulting wines were aged on lees, with regular stirring, for a further 11 months before bottling in February 2023. Cape Crest ’22 is a blend of 88% sauvignon blanc, 7% sauvignon gris and 5% semillon."

95/100 and Outstanding, Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier (2020 vintage)

"From one of the premier producers in hawkes bay the bouquet says it all with a seductive, precise and fresh fruit core, grapefruit, hay orange and apple. With a mx of new and seasoned oak along with lees stirring adds texture and complexity. A small % of Semillon in the blend adds breadth and a fine silk texture. Am impressive wine in perfect balance. Best drinking from today and through 2026."

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2020 vintage)

"A blend of sauvignon blanc 85%, semillon 9% and sauvignon gris 6%. Fermented and matured in oak for 11 months. Richly textured, bone-dry wine with oak and nutty yeast lees quite prominent, although the slightly grassy varietal character is clearly evident. A classy wine. 26 JAN 2022."
