We managed to buy a small allocation of this extremely rare regional white from Italy. There may be no other chance to try it, so grab this if you're a Europhile. For most of the 20th Century this was a forgotten variety, it was resurrected by Elvio Cogno as an experiment in 1994. A very distinctive local wine, it is plumped up with juicy tree fruits but is also mineral and saline with that poise and freshness so typical of Italian whites. Delicious wine from a superb producer.

Its Origins

After working with Marcarini in La Morra, Elvio Cogno returned to his family village in 1990 to rebuild an historical farm into the home of one of Piedmont's more important Barolo producers. Now daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore are the force behind the rising fortunes of the house, producing strictly classic wines with modern cleanliness and technique, low yields and sustainable, closely managed vineyards.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Kerin O'Keefe

"The Elvio Cogno 2024 Anas-Cetta is a beautiful white, starting with its alluring scents of spring wildflower, citrus, herb and stone fruit. Made with Nascetta, a grape native to the township of Novello, fermented partly in steel and partly in 15hl Slavonian oak casks, the bright, elegant palate offers lime, white peach and hazelnut before closing on a savory saline tang. Drink or hold for more complexity. Abv: 13%."

95/100 Wine Enthusiast, Jeff Porter (2021 vintage)

"From the estate that brought back Nascetta, this wine is all class. Opening aromas reveal melon, pineapple, white flowers and creamy citrus notes. It's beautiful on the palate with depth, texture and layers of mixed citrus and tropical fruits. Drink now, or cellar it to see how unique this grape really is."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com (2022 vintage)

"‘Brilliant straw with a golden tinge. A noble nose of savoury lemon with hints of hazelnut and oatmeal. Really develops in the glass. Rich lemon fruit that is completely dry. Long and linear and with plenty of stuffing. (WS)."
