2024 Ata Rangi Te Wā Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc

93 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A sophisticated Sauvignon Blanc from premium Martinborough producers, Ata Rangi. This is an extremely elegant and textural style, with piercing aromatics rounded out by a decent portion (nearly half) being fermented in old oak, and a much smaller portion receiving some skin contact. The result is typical Ata Rangi: a classic varietal style that will also appeal to any palate.

Its Origins

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for PInot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2024 vintage

"2024 was a beautiful vintage, blessed with optimal cool climate ripening conditions. January and February the critical times that determine vine and grape health were dry but not overly hot, great for capturing pure aromatic expression and weight on the palate. 20% of the blend is from whole bunch fermentation and another 10% fermented with skins only. These skins portions give an intense aromatic profile of lime, rosemary, jasmine and sherbet. Savoury notes of cashew nuts and gouda cheese follow through to an intense, textured palate with great length. The remainder of the fruit is fermented in barrel, giving weight and complexity. This style of Sauvignon Blanc is far removed from what has come to be expected from New Zealand. A fantastic expression of our place."

93/100 Stephen Wong MW (2022 vintage)

"Pale gold. A distinctly cool-climate expression of cut grass and hay with subtle apple aromas. Herbaceous, bony structure defines the palate, leading to light-weight, pithy citrus flavours on the finish. Subtle and restrained, it is an austere sauvignon with strong mineral streaks and a satisfying grippy chew on the back. A cerebral and contemplative wine which will open and develop in the coming years. This will be fantastic with food."
