2024 Ata Rangi Martinborough Pinot Gris

94 Points Richard Caro

As usual, Ata Rangi makes one of NZ's best Pinot Gris wines. While it is fruit-laden and weighty, it is also dry enough for the delicious florals and minerals to show through. Though delicious now, it has legs for the cellar. A pedigree wine — and for the price it's a stunner!

Its Origins

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for PInot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2024 vintage

"Fragrant aromas of fresh pear, lychee and citrus meld with perfumed notes of rose, jasmine and citronella on the nose. The palate greets with spicy notes of nutmeg and ground ginger. A textured and salivating wine, with a fine balance of phenolic texture and fresh acidity. Notes of wet stone and a gentle herbal balm come through on the finish giving a long, cool seam on the finish. A wonderfully complex wine from a truly great vintage, this wine captures the purity and complexity of a great harvest. This wine will only benefit further from time in the cellar."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Complex pinot gris with ripe tree fruits, pear, apple and a seasoning of roast chestnut, ginger and mandarin blossom. Intriguing and attractive wine in a dry(ish) style. A delicious wine that's ready now. 17 NOV 2021."

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2021 vintage)

"It's serious in style with texture and complexity, yet offers instant appeal and upfront drinkability. The beautifully fragrant bouquet shows apricot, poached pear, oatmeal, subtle spice and floral notes on the nose, followed by a succulent palate displaying excellent weight and plush mouthfeel. Generous and harmonious, making it hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2030. www.atarangi.co.nz. Dec 2021."
