Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

98/100 Andrew Caillard MW

"Deep crimson. Beautiful blackcurrant mulberry chinotto espresso aromas with praline, vanilla notes. Generous, buoyant and supple with superb cassis, mulberry, boysenberry fruits, plentiful chalky tannins, attractive volume and underlying mocha, vanilla oak notes. Chocolaty/ cedar firm at the finish with seductive dark fruits and linear fresh acidity. Superb density, balance and mineral length. A standout wine."

19/20 Joelle Thompson

"Talk about a fruit explosion thanks to Merlot’s 58% of this deeply fruit forward wine, underpinned with the excellent structure and smoothness of the two Cabernets; Cabernet Sauvignon makes up 25% while Cabernet Franc makes up 17%. The wine spent 18 months in French oak, 30% new and comes out with an alcohol of 13.9% which makes for a rich but balanced flavourful drop from winemaker Jenny Dobson, who shows her hand at understanding the great classic French reds that this wine is modelled on. It has great length and appealing drinkability."

96/100 Cameron Douglas

"Enticing bouquet led by scents of roasted dark plums and blackberry, sweet toasty barrel with clove and vanilla pod then aromas of violets and sweet tobacco. A core of ripe red berry flavours and spicy, toasty barrel are emphasized by the an abundance of fine chalky tannins adding mouthfeel and chewiness. As the wine open up in glass the flavours of dark rose and violet emerge contrasted by dark plum and berry fruit, sweet oak and salivating acidity. There’s a saline note building on the complexity and length. Delicious, youthful, fresh and complex. Best drinking from 2023 through 2033+."
