2024 Neudorf Moutere Home Block Pinot Gris

94 Points Richard Caro
In stock
One of the best Pinot Gris in the country, this is rich in texture with loads of crisp fruit flavours but hardly any sweetness. While easy to love, this wine suits high brow terms such as 'perfectly poised' with beautiful 'mineral layering', while still offering that touch of generous fruit typical of a classy Pinot Gris. Great for any occasion, but especially delicious with crayfish.

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2023 vintage

"Vineyard established 1978.The 2023-2024 growing season was splendid, marked by a welcome return to an El Nino weather patter, and more stable weather conditions without dramatic temperature or rainfall extremes. Summer months were dry and warm, but followed by an "autumnal" finish to the season. A superb season producing wines with fruit intensity and poise. 100% hand harvested. Pressed on gentle cycle. Cool settled for 48 hours and racked. 100% Wild Yeast fermentation in 50% Stainless Steel, 50% neutral Puncheon. This Pinot Gris is all about texture. The first sip is like biting into a just-ripe nashi pear, its crisp juiciness giving way to the delicate perfume of lily of the valley and the golden warmth of saffron. A flicker of tangerine zest sparks brightness, while white pepper and cardamom weave in a gentle spice. Beneath it all, a chalky mineral thread hums through the wine, adding quiet tension to its generous texture. The neutral barrel contact brings weight and depth, making for a wine that feels both precise and effortless. Serve lightly chilled alongside spiced dishes, warm company, or the quiet hum of late afternoon."

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2022 vintage)

"Ripe, fruity, organic, floral, variteal and compelx bouquet with myriad scents of apple and quince, sweet citrus peel and a savoury mineral quality. A fine leesy mineral quality layers in complexity and breadth. A satin texture touches the palate first then flavours of citrus and green pear, apple and quince. Delicious with a nice bite of acidity highlighting some of the mineral savoury qualities. New and taut, youthful and fresh."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2022 vintage)

"Luscious pinot gris with ginger/spice, white pepper, honeysuckle, apricot and a suggestion of vanilla. Complex, weighty wine with a backbone of fine, dry tannins and refreshing acidity. Good food wine."
