Lustau Pedro Ximenez San Emilio Sherry 375ml

95 Points Bob Campbell MW
In stock
Syrupy-sweet and full of raisin flavour, the Pedro Ximénez grapes are literally raisined by laying on straw mats in the sun for several days. Deep, rich and complex, this is delicious with fruitcakes, chocolate desserts or even — don't tell the wine snobs — simply poured over ice cream.

Pedro Ximinez

Its Origins

Bodegas Lustau was founded in 1896 by Mr. José Ruiz-Berdejo. His son-in-law Emilio Lustau Ortega moved the winery to the old neighbourhood of Santiago, in the historic quarter of Jerez de la Frontera. There, in buildings that formed part of the historic Moorish walls of the city, he slowly began to expand the business, still as a vintner. In 1950, the company began exporting its own wines from Jerez. Lustau's Pedro Ximénez grapes are laid out in the sun for several days to raisin. Fermentation is stopped, in order to keep the natural sugar of the grapes. Afterwards this wine is fortified and then aged in the “solera and criaderas” system. Dark mahogany in colour and viscous. Redolent of ripe fruit in the mouth, dried figs and roasted coffee beans. Very sweet, velvety and soft in the mouth, with an extremely long aftertaste.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Amazing wine - coffee, licorice, tea. Long. Green-rimmed. Very impressive."

93/100 Wine Enthusiast, Michael Schachner

"With piercing aromas of raisin pudding, molasses and spice, this rolls out the welcome mat and more. Luscious is probably as tame as you can put it; this is a ribald sweet wine with acidic backbone and hugely intense flavors of baked brown sugar, cinnamon cake and molasses. Powerful but still racy due to bracing acidity. About as good as it gets with P.X."

92/100 James Suckling

"An excellent introduction to this extreme category. Intense caramelized-grapefruit character with plenty of toffee aroma. However, for a pedro ximénez, this has a certain lightness of touch and the sweetness is restrained. Long, raisiny but clean finish. Drink now."
