2022 Astrolabe Wrekin Late Harvest Chenin Blanc 375ml
Grape
Chenin Blanc
Its Origins
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)
"Moderately sweet chenin blanc with honey, apple, pear and tangy citrus flavours. Beautifully balanced to give an initial hint of sweetness and a lovely mouth-watering finish. A slightly edgy sticky. 19/10/2018." Drink 2018 - 2024
Yvonne Lorkin (2013 vintage)
"Chenin blanc is rare here, there's precious little about even in a good year, so for Simon Waghorn and his team to have a crack at making a late-harvest style was pretty risky - but it paid off. With sweet, smoky guava, a squeak of apple pie and soft, honeyed notes on the palate, it's rich, generous, laid-back and darn lovely served with a large chunk of aged gouda."
