2023 Ata Rangi Potiki Chardonnay

95 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A delicious new Chardonnay label from Ata Rangi. The Potiki Chardonnay is sourced in Martinborough — like their Craighall — though in this case from their younger vines (Potiki means last-born child). The result is a wine of great vibrancy and freshness, which has been expertly handled and rounded out by fermentation and aging in select oak vessels. A lovely new wine from Martinborough's old hands, the youthful Potiki is one to try.

Its Origins

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for PInot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"A complex pure bouquet defining minerality and site first then scents of white peach and overripe grapefruit peel, there’s a line pomaceous fruits then barrel spice and fine chalky lees ideas. At ambient to slightly cool temperature this wine performs best with a fine silk-cream touch, acid line and core fruit flavours all in harmony. Fine fruit and wood tannins frame the ideas of minerality as well as adding mouthfeel and length through the palate. Well made, delicious and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2030."

95/100 James Suckling

"A compact yet rich chardonnay for this vintage, showing cooked apples, pears and hints of smoky aromas and flavors with some grilled oak and flint at the end. Lemongrass and white flowers too. Medium- to full-bodied, this has attractive fruit and a spicy finish. Lots going on here. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Offering finesse and poise, the wine shows white flesh peach, Gala apple, subtle vanilla, and almond meal characters on the nose. The palate displays excellent weight and refined texture, splendidly structured by fine acidity, finishing with a terrific line and length. Harmonious and complex, it’s beautifully proportioned with a lengthy, elegant finish. At its best: now to 2032. www.atarangi.co.nz. March 2025." Drink 2025 - 2032
