2024 Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Blanc

A classic Waipara white from longstanding experts in the region, Pegasus Bay. Their Sauvignon-Semillon blend is now labelled Sauvignon Blanc, because it has a smaller portion of barrel aged Semillon in the blend. But the Bordeaux feel is still the same, with bright fruit expression getting a rounded texture from whole bunch fermentation, long maceration and aging on yeast lees. Exceptional wine for the price, the Pegasus Sauvignon Blanc is still a classic choice!

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"The nose is softly full, with fresh aromas of grapefruit, gooseberry, lemongrass, snow pea, delicate spice and flint. Medium-full bodied, aromas of gooseberry and grapefruit entwined with stonefruit, lemongrass, wet stone and flintstone. The ripe fruit is underlined with taut acidity, which flows on a fine mineral, stony mouthfeel, providing delightful weight and unfolding savoury elements and flinty complexity to a long, charming finish. A soulful Sauvignon Blanc with impeccable structure, liveliness and complexity. Match with smoked fish pie and goat's cheese tart over the next 5+ years. The fruit was picked over a period of time to produce a spectrum of flavours, the free-run juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at a cool temperature, and a selection of fruit was fermented whole bunch and then matured on skins for 200 days approx, a small portion of aged Semillon has been included in the finished wine. Both varieties were aged on their lees for 10 months before bottling. 19/20 pts (95 pts) Mar 2025." Drink 2025 - 2030+

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"It's fabulously lifted on the nose, showing aromas of grapefruit, apricot, garden herbs, and lemon zest, with a hint of savoury nuance. The wonderfully weighted palate displays excellent focus and drive, beautifully supported by vibrant acidity, finishing long and flavoursome. At its best: now to 2032. www.pegasusbay.com. March 2025." Drink 2025 - 2032

95/100 Parkers Wine Advocate Erin Larkin (2023 vintage)

"I have to admit to loving this wine. It's wild. The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc leads with dried herbs, tobacco, jasmine tea, graphite, that complex drift of dehydrated orange peel—from the skin-contact component—and a host of other characters. A wine that you can sit on and consider is an exciting wine in my book. In the mouth, the wine is textural and dry, layered and complex, with all of the characters mentioned above, a warmth of alcohol and plenty of other attractive things that keep me coming back for more. I wrote, upon my visit to the estate last year, that "Pegasus Bay is responsible for Rieslings worth crossing an ocean for." I'd say the same for this Sauvignon Blanc. This is an excellent wine, among my favorites in all of New Zealand. It's textural as hell, chewy and great."
