2020 Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Merlot

93 Points Richard Caro

This Merlot shows why Craggy Range are so classy. The hot and dry Gimblett Gravels is probably the best spot in NZ for this variety, but instead of making an over-rich style they follow Bordeaux and highlight freshness, balance and structure. Juicy plum and berry fruits drive the nose and palate with charming nuances of spice, aniseed and earth. Craggy's Merlot is a standard of value and almost impossible to beat.

Its Origins

Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2020 vintage

"Bright crimson red in colour with a purple hue. Impressive perfume, with subtle notes of brioche and black liquorice underneath. It slides across the palate with crushed blue fruits and plummy richness, but with a flicker of firm chocolate laced tannins and fresh acid keeping vibrancy. Approachable now, although rewards with patience."
