2024 Greywacke Marlborough Pinot Gris

94 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A rich-textured but dry Pinot Gris from Marlborough. Made by the ex-Cloudy Bay people at Greywacke, this wine displays real knowledge of the region and its varieties. Beautifully aromatic in an exotic, sophisticated sort of way, it is rounded and generous on the palate — but not too sweet. This is proper Pinot Gris for the seafood barbeque and dinner table.

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Parkers Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2023 Pinot Gris is rich with flavour and texture, and I love it for that. There are notes of white pepper, pineapple husk, cracker biscuit, crushed shells, sourdough crust and lemon barley. This is a ripe, complex wine with impact and length, and if you ask Kevin Judd, he'll tell you (probably show you, if you ask nicely) that Pinot Gris ages gracefully too." Drink 2024 - 2033

93/100 Jamie Goode

"This is rich and textural, with a nice spicy flourish alongside bold melon and pear fruit, with some cherry and citrus notes in the mix, too, and even a suggestion of that bacon fat character that rich Pinot Gris can sometimes show. It finishes with a touch of pithy bitterness that helps frame the generous fruit, and moderate acidity. This is a lovely Pinot Gris."

94/100 Real Review, Huon Hooke (2021 vintage)

"Light yellow/straw hue with a struck-match flinty reductive high note, the palate is rich and intense yet also subtle and refined in its texture, generous and harmonious along the length. A whisper of sweetness, well controlled. Ripe yellow stone-fruits fill the tightly coiled palate. Excellent wine."
