2022 Domaine des Aubuisieres Vouvray Le Petit Clos (Sec)

93 Points John Gillman
In stock
An exciting dry Vouvray from a single-site managed by our favourite Loire Valley producer, Fouquet, who is now releasing it under the label Domaine des Aubruisieres. The vines of Le Petit Clos lie on clay and limestone soils near the village of Marigny. The stylish result is an elegant and weighty Chenin Blanc that is dry, but with a textural layering enhanced by vinification in clay amphorae. A serious white for the price, Le Petit Clos is a must-try for Vouvray lovers.

Its Origins

After gaining experience in Alsace and Burgundy, Bernard Fouquet established his own winery in 1982 in the Loire, focussed on the Chenin Blanc grape. He soon created a trial and error knowledge of his terroir and by the mid-late 1990s, when Vouvray had a series of stellar vintages, Fouquet wines were among the foremost in the world market for the price. With an emphasis on purity and use of stainless steel, Fouquet aims to capture his respective terroir characteristic in each style: mainly calcareous clay in his dry and dessert wines, mainly flint/silica in his demi-sec and sparkling wines. Today Fouquet’s labels remain inexpensive but are considered to be among Vouvray’s best at any price.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Wine Doctor, Chris Kissack

"From a small parcel behind Moncontour, the juice was vinified in six 10-hectolitre stoneware jarres. It presents a lovely tension and purity on the nose, with pressed apple and sweet pear and a hint of confit intensity, touched with wax, chalk, wildflowers, honeysuckle and crushed stone. The palate is polished and honeyed, but possesses a firm, serious, mineral and acid-fresh undercurrent, and a dense wrapping of phenolic grip around it all. This grip persists into the finish, which displays a saline purity as well as a flourish of acids and minerals. This is impressive and shows what modern dry Vouvray can be. This should age well."

92/100 View from the Cellar, John Gilman

"The 2022 Vouvray "le Petit Clos" from Monsieur Fouquet is a lovely wine that seems to hover between Sec and Demi-Sec in style in this vintage, as it comes in at 12.5 percent octane, but seems to carry just a touch more residual sugar on the palate than the lovely le Marigny bottling. The bouquet is deep and complex, offering up scents of sweet quince, a touch of pineapple, a refined base of chalky soil, lemon peel, incipient notes of honeycomb and a lovely topnote of orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with superb depth at the core, lovely soil reflection and grip, zesty acids and just a kiss of sweetness on the attack. The finish is long, beautifully balanced and vibrant. This is another excellent example of the lovely 2022 vintage in Vouvray."

92/100 Decanter, Jim Budd (2021 vintage)

"Both floral and stone fruit notes define the nose, with a subtle hint of quince. A precise, taut wine that has made good use of its zesty acidity giving balance and freshness to the finish. It has good potential to develop in bottle and age well. The vines are planted on clay limestone with the grapes harvested by machine and then vinified in clay amphorae, with malolactic fermentation completed. It’s then matured in amphorae for six months. Domaine des Aubuisières was founded in 1978 by Bernard Fouquet. He soon established the domaine as one the leading producers in Vouvray. In 2021 Bernard sold to Charles Lesaffre, although he and Monique, his wife, are still involved." Drink 2023 - 2040 (2021 vintage)
