2020 Hartford Four Hearts Chardonnay

94 Points Parker's Wine Advocate
In stock
An outstanding Chardonnay from a single vineyard in the Sonoma sub-region of Russian River. It is sourced mainly from the Dehlinger vineyard on Laguna Ridge, where old vines (40 years+) include treasured heirloom clones of Chardonnay that are located, like the other vineyard sources, in the heart of the Russian River zone. In this foggy and cool climate, an extended hang time has allowed this fairly opulent style to reach huge ripeness and body, while retaining flavour definition and immense complexity. A treasure of this terroir.

Its Origins

Hartford is an estate belonging to the Jackson Family holdings. Hartford’s wines are rare. Year after year, they rank among the most sought-after collectables from California. Since the 1994 vintage, owners Don and Jenny Hartford have built the winery’s reputation on limited-production, handmade, single-vineyard Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Old Vine Zinfandels from some of Northern California’s greatest vineyards. Hartford Family Winery is located in the town of Forestville, roughly 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. This is the heart of the famed Russian River Valley. In addition to their own estate, Hartford harvests fruit from a handful of prized vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Carneros, Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley. These are all high-reputation, low-yielding, sustainably-farmed sites situated in cool-climate sub-regions. Without exception, Hartford’s wines are intense, thought provoking and expressive of both variety and terroir. They have been served at the White House on many occasions and are staples on “Reserve” wine lists around the country. Since 2011, Jeff Stewart, a specialist in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel, has been in charge of winemaking.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"The 2020 Chardonnay Four Hearts Vineyard comes mostly from 45-year-old Wente vines in the Laguna Ridge neighborhood of the Russian River Valley. It was barrel fermented and matured for 11 months in 35% new French oak. It has a beautiful perfume of jasmine, white peaches, ginger and roasted almonds, plus touches of lemon cream and baking spice in the undercurrent. The medium-bodied palate surprises with its combination of intense fruits and focused, tangy acidity. It has a satiny texture, streaks of flinty character and a very long, layered finish. 1,484 cases were produced." Drink 2022 - 2027

94/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"Aged for 11 months in 35% new French oak and predominantly from the Laguna Ridge neighborhood of the Russian River Valley, the 2020 Chardonnay Four Hearts Vineyards is lifted, with flinty reduction and a touch darker mineral tone. The palate has richness, savor, and more structure along with a note of pithy citrus and more concentration and tension." Drink 2024 - 2034

92/100 Wine Enthusiast

"Opening in a strong perfume of oak, this robust, concentrated white offers woody spice, lively acidity and rich layers of Gravenstein apple, tangerine and ginger. A lush finish accentuates its bold, memorable personality."
