A totally unique NZ Chardonnay. Top fruit from Te Awanga is fermented in a fascinating new device, an egg-shaped concrete vat. This shape helps to create a plump, rounded Chardonnay by encouraging contact with yeast lees. If that's too technical, it's a gorgeously rich, aromatic and distinctive Chardy with hardly even a hint of oak, but oh so delicious. Try this!

Its Origins

Tony Bish is a legend of New Zealand winemaking who spent decades making such iconic wines as Sacred Hill's Rifleman's Chardonnay. Now he is channeling his Chardonnay expertise into his own labels, which he produces in a stylish urban winery he has set up in Napier. Much of his wine is aimed at delivering classy examples of the the rich and creamy, 'old school' style of Chardonnay. But Tony's incredible touch and experience ensures that each wine is balanced and refined — even with all their big, bold appeal. Meanwhile, Tony's ongoing experimentation in style and technique is producing results such as his deliciously un-oaked "Golden Egg" Chardonnay, and his super premium "Zen" Chardonnay, which is made in an incredible egg-shaped oak vessel.

"Pristine, fresh and pure fruited bouquet of ripe citrus and white peach scents, a layer of finesse and complexity from time spent in egg reveals scents of lees and flintiness, white flowers and a mineral seam suggesting limestone and clay. Taut, youthful, crisp and dry as the wine touches the palate. Flavours mirror the bouquet led by grapefruit and lemon pith, apple and white peach. Super fine fruit tannins and a fine layers from time spent in wood then a lees and mineral complexity follow. A lovely wine with excellent potential. Best drinking from late 2026 or early 2027 through 2035+."
